 - Reconciling People: Coventry Cathedral's Story
Reconciling People: Coventry Cathedral's

To mark the 50th anniversary in 2012 of the rebuilding of Coventry Cathedral after its destruction by incendiary bombs in November 1940, this lavishly illustrated volume celebrates a unique church with a unique mission. The decision to rebuild the Cathedral was taken the morning after the bombing - not as an act of defiance, but one of faith, trust and hope for the future of the world. Reconciling People tells the story of every aspect the Cathedral's life: its architecture in war and in peace, its theology, worship and spirituality, music and the arts, its mission and ministry, its place in the life of the city, the Cathedral as a place of reconciliation, its people over the decades and its life today. Co-published with the Friends of Coventry Cathedral, this celebratory volume is a record of a how a 900-year old cathedral rose from the ashes of violent destruction to become a symbol of reconciliation and to develop a unique mission among Britain's churches.

 - The Blitzed City: The Destruction of Coventry, 1940
The Blitzed City: The Destruction of Coventry,

The Luftwaffe's targetting and destruction of Coventry city remains the biggest and most destructive air raid on British soil during the Second World War. Seen as a centre of British armaments production, the German high command wished to inflict terror and panic on the British public, a plan that had paid dividends during their relentless conquest of France that year. Attacking over two nights in November, 1940 they systematically bombed and destroyed the bulk of the city, making thousands homeless, and killing over 400 men, women and children.Such was the devastation, panic and disorder it wrought, that Winston Churchill ordered a news blackout for three weeks in order to quell the unease and morale-sapping effect that the raid had. But people at the time acted with great bravery to save those trapped in bombed out and burning buildings, as well as caring for those badly injured (of which there were thousands), and fighting the Nazi planes coming in to attack the city itself. Now, for the very first time we interview those veterans who survived the raid and helped fight the flames and bombs to tell the story of this iconic event. Such was the effect it had on the country that when Bomber Command began night time raids against German cities — Hamburg, Cologne and most famously,...

In December 1974 Tangerine Dream were invited to play in the grand setting of Rheims Cathedral, a move certainly seen at the time as ground-breaking. They were then invited to perform in the cathedrals of York, Liverpool and Coventry. The tour attracted unprecedented coverage in the media, especially at Coventry Cathedral, an iconic building rising like a phoenix on the ruins of the old cathedral bombed to bits by the Germans in 1940 (Tangerine Dream is, after all, a German band) as a celebration of peace and reconciliation, as well as a lasting showcase for great contemporary art. The nave is dominated by a gigantic tapestry by Graham Sutherland, the main door dwarfed by a sculpture of St Michael & The Devil by Jacob Epstein, and the consecration in 1962 heard the first performance of Britten s incomparable War Requiem. To their lasting credit, Tangerine Dream contributed to this celebration. This DVD also contains footage of the Tangerine Dream from the legendary music programme, All You Need is Love. - Winston Churchill: A Brilliantly Concise Account of One of History's Most Famous Men (All you need to know)
Winston Churchill: A Brilliantly Concise Account of One of History's Most Famous Men (All you need to

In his day Winston Churchill was one of the most famous human beings who ever lived. In 1945 most people in the world would have seen his name in the headlines,  heard the latest news of him on the radio or seen his face beaming or glowering in the newsreels. His funeral in 1965 is said to have been watched on television by 350 million people around the globe. Those days are long gone, and the massed ranks of his  contemporaries have been scythed away leaving only a few who remember him as a living presence. But of all the politicians of the 20th century, he is the only one to have inspired an apparently never-ending cascade of books, articles and documentaries. Part of the explanation lies in the fact that his place in our past is still in dispute.  He is as controversial today as he was for much of his lifetime, and most of those who study him fall into one of two camps: pro or ante. Neutrality and indifference are rare.  In this book Paul Addison, who has been studying Churchill for 40 years, weighs the arguments, looking at both the pro and anti Churchill case, but concluding not only that he was a great man but that his life was one of the most astonishing and fortunate accidents in world history.

 - St Michael's Coventry: The Rise and Fall of the Old Cathedral
St Michael's Coventry: The Rise and Fall of the Old

The old cathedral of St Michael became known throughout the world, ironically, as a result of its devastation in a World War Two air raid, in November 1940, and its subsequent resurrection as an intrinsic part of the inspiration for new Coventry Cathedral and a symbol of peace and reconciliation. Previously one of the largest parish churches in the country, elevated to cathedral status as late as 1918, it was a superb example of the fifteenth-century Gothic architectural style, with its magnificent tower and spire, and notable collection of medieval stained glass. This celebratory and richly illustrated volume is based on a conservation plan commissioned by the World Monuments Fund Britain, tracing the long history of the church and offering an architectural and artistic appreciation of what was constructed and what remains.

 - Coventry - Cathedral Of Peace: Healing The Wounds Of History In International Reconciliation
Coventry - Cathedral Of Peace: Healing The Wounds Of History In International

In 1940, when Hitler's bombers reduced Coventry's ancient cathedral to ruins, he coined a new word. He threatened to "coventrate" all of Britain. Coventry thus was given an iconic status as a symbol of the triumph of good over evil, of forgiveness over revenge, of reconciliation and peace over division and conflict. The ruins are still there today as a warning, but the new and magnificent new cathedral has become the powerhouse of a ministry both to the city and to international conflicts. The book is in three parts. Part 1 is a series of dramatic and moving stories of that outreach, from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Part 2 describes the history of how the cathedral came to be such a unique and active symbol of renewal and peace. Part 3 asks what lessons are to be learned from that story for a world in greater danger and with deeper divisions than ever. Finally, the author, from his long experience of international reconciliation, defines the steps that are essential if the old wounds of history are really to be healed.

Fire in Coventry: Centenary Edition With a new Foreword by the Bishop of Coventry Dr Christopher Cocksworth (Christian Classics Book

Fire in Coventry: The amazing and heart-warming story of renewal in the Diocese of Coventry after the Second World War, now re-issued in celebration of the 2018 Centenary of the Diocese of Coventry. This wonderful book gives the sense of excitement surrounding the consecration of the new cathedral in 1962. With a new Foreword by the current Bishop of Coventry, Dr Christopher Cocksworth, the book’s first half provides an narrative of emerging events, giving a vivid description of the small-group meetings, the conversations with the then-Bishop, Cuthbert Bardsley, and the way that people – many of whom had experienced the horror of war first-hand – were deeply moved by the pilgrimage of the Cross of Nails through the Diocese. The second half then focuses on the spiritual significance of these events, and contains nuanced and deep reflections on humility, trust, and love. Authored by Stephen Verney, a former Diocesan Missioner, the book’s first-person view also gives a portrait of a young leader who is struggling to respond to God’s calling and to the needs of a particular community.

DVD. Film director Tony Palmer had always been deeply unsatisfied with his film of legendary Krautrock band Tangerine Dream. For one thing it had contained the wrong music. Palmer explains: "Well, it was a cunning piece of Richard Bransonism! That is, it was the soundtrack of the yet-to-be-released album. So, he was doing a cunning bit of PR, because what they played in Coventry cathedral was music from two existing albums and that was of no interest to him whatsoever. What was interesting for Richard, and what was important for Richard - I respect that, of course - was to promote the new, not-yet-released album. And I was a sucker, and I fell for it, and we cut all the pictures to the new, yet-to-be-released album. So what we've done this time is we've actually gone back and listened again to the music they did actually play, and of course now, I realize that it was quite different. And I've had to recut not all the pictures, but a great many of the pictures to that soundtrack that was the music that they actually played. So, for the first time, we've got a decent cover, a proper restoration of the pictures, and the real sound"

Coventry Cathedral is the most important public building in Britain of the postwar era. Louise Campbell examines its poignant ruins, its elegant display of technology, and its spectacular integration of works of art. Using original documents and drawings, she provides a case study of a building in which a significant role was allocated to works of art, and in doing so illuminates the creative process of both artist and architect. This interesting and original reevaluation fills a gap in literature on British architecture of the period.
