Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower was born October 14, 1890, in Denison, Texas. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1915, he carved out a distinguished military career that included commanding the Allied Forces that landed in North Africa, serving as supreme commander of the troops invading France on D-Day, and serving as the first supreme commander of North Atlantic Treaty Organization forces. For a brief period, he also was president of Columbia University. Once Eisenhower retired from active service, he announced his candidacy for president. He won an impressive victory and took the oath of office on January 20, 1953. The next day he wrote My first day at the President's Desk. Plenty of worries and difficult problems. But such has been my portion for a long time - the result is that this just seems today like a continuation of all I've been doing since July '41 and even before that. Eisenhower went on to serve two terms in office. Highlights of his presidency include: Negotiating an armistice in the Korean War. Participating in the Geneva Conference on Indochina, which resulted in the portioning of Vietnam. Launching the first atomic submarine, the U.S.S. Nautilus. - Dansco US Eisenhower Dollar Coin Album 1971 - 1978 with Proof #8176
Dansco US Eisenhower Dollar Coin Album 1971 - 1978 with Proof

Dansco Coin Albums have been a longtime companion for both expert numismatists and beginning coin collectors. The Eisenhower Dollars with Proof 1971-1978 Dansco Album comes in a 5/8" binder and holds up to 48 coins. The album has 4 Dansco pages (series: 8176-1 to 8176-4), each one holding and displaying all Eisenhower dollars minted from 1971-1978 including the proof coins. Engraver Frank Gasparro designed the new coins. The obverse had President Dwight D. Eisenhower's portrait and the reverse saw an eagle landing on the moon. Coins for collectors were struck in 40% silver, while the circulation issues were made of copper and nickel. No Eisenhower coins were issued in 1975 and no silver clad coins were struck after 1974. A special coin with the Liberty Bell and the moon on the reverse was launched in 1976. From 1977-1978 the eagle landing on the moon was placed again on the reverse. Eisenhower coins issued in silver weigh 24.59 grams, while the coins made of copper and nickel weigh 22.68 grams. All Eisenhower coins measure 38.1 mm. Eisenhower dollars were coined at the Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints. Dansco Coin Albums have their pages attached with metal screws, making it easy to add and replace.

 - 1976 D Eisenhower Type 1 Dollar Choice Uncirculated
1976 D Eisenhower Type 1 Dollar Choice

The 1976 -D Eisenhower Dollar Type 1 Bicentennial dollars were the first of the three denominations to be struck for distribution to the public; these were coined beginning in February 1975.The silver pieces were struck at San Francisco beginning on April 23, 1975.The Mint found that the copper nickel dollar was striking indistinctly, a problem not seen with the silver pieces. The Mint called a halt in production to allow Mint Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro to modify the dies; the most noticeable change is that the revised issue, or Type II as it came to be known, have narrower, sharper lettering on the reverse. All silver pieces (struck only at San Francisco) are Type I; all three mints struck both Type I and Type II copper nickel pieces. All coins included in 1976 proof sets are Type II.

1976-S U.S. Eisenhower Silver Dollar Coin, 40% Pure Silver, Mint State Condition, Bicentennial

A 1976 Eisenhower dollar, minted at the San Francisco mint (S mintmark). Eisenhower dollars were the first dollar coins produced in the U.S. since the Peace Dollar series, which ended in 1935. Dollar coins were never popular with the public, and circulated little outside of the west (where they were primarily used in casinos). Even the U.S. Mint considered dollar coins a waste of resources. Despite the lack of public support and the opposition of the U.S. Mint, a Nevada senator succeeded in pushing a bill through Congress to reestablish the dollar coin in 1971, with a design featuring the recently-deceased President Eisenhower. While the bill was passed successfully, there was disagreement between Republicans and Democrats over whether the coin should be produced in silver or base metal (copper-nickel). Eventually a compromise was reached - the coin would be produced in copper-nickel for circulation, with 40% silver coins sold to collectors for a small premium. The Eisenhower dollar was produced from 1971-1978, until it was replaced by the Susan B. Anthony dollar. The obverse side of the coin features a portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th president of the United States. While the Eisenhower dollars produced for circulation were struck in copper-nickel, these coins we...
