Design Your Own Coat of Arms: An Introduction to Heraldry (Dover Children's Activity

Hundreds of years ago, warriors identified themselves in battle by using certain colors and symbols on their shields. Later, these distinguishing marks also appeared on surcoats worn over armor. Thus, the term "coat of arms" was born. Now, with genealogist Rosemary Chorzempa's fascinating new book, anyone interested in the ancient and distinctive language of heraldry can create his or her own coat of arms. This easy-to-read, profusely illustrated guide to the history, symbolism, and construction of heraldic devices allows even a child to fashion authentic designs.Step-by-step directions tell how to trace the shape of the shield and its divisions and how to select symbols that reflect personal origins, traits, and achievements. (Forty-seven illustrations include human forms and manmade objects such as forearms, helmets, crowns, whips, books, crosses, bells, and much more. Celestial, plant, and animal shapes include suns, roses, trees, eagles, bars, dolphins, dragons, and serpents.) You'll find tips on necessary materials, how to color and outline your design, how to achieve professional results, and even how to register your coat of arms. You'll also find sample coats of arms belonging to some of the world's most famous people, corporations, and nations.Once you've finished your em...

 - Dictionary of British Arms: Medieval Ordinary Volume II
Dictionary of British Arms: Medieval Ordinary Volume

This book is the second in a series of volumes designed to enable those with a working knowledge of heraldry to identify medieval British coats of arms. Listed in this volume are entries from Bend to Chevrons. The project is the result of a bequest to the Society of Antiquaries in 1926 for the production of a new edition of Papworth's Ordinary which has remained, since its publication in 1874, the principal tool for the identification of British coats of arms. An Ordinary, in this context, is a collection of arms arranged alphabetically according to their designs, as opposed to an armory which is arranged alphabetically by surname. The present work is the second in a four volume Ordinary covering the period before the beginning of the heraldic visitations in 1530. Its publication will mean that the wide range of people interested in medieval arms - historians, antiquaries, archaeologists, genealogist and those dealing in and collecting medieval objects - will be able to identify accurately the arms that occur in a medieval context. Even those without a knowledge of the subject will be able, by means of the index, to discover the blazon of arms recorded under particular surnames in the Middle Ages.

 - An Introduction to Heraldry
An Introduction to Heraldry

This book gives a brief introduction to heraldry, the art and science of coats of arms, sometimes also called escutcheons or shields. It gives the beginning heraldic artist the basics of the colors, the arrangement of the shield and the complete coat of arms, the shield's geography, ordinaries, and charges, as well as the idea of marshalling by which family heritage is recorded within a coat of arms. A number of outline drawings suitable for copying or coloring are included. The book is written by a Chestertonian, a student of the writings of English writer G. K. Chesterton, and contains a handy collection of relevant excerpts from his writings. It also contains an appendix which discusses the use of heraldry in fiction, demonstrated by shields from the author's Saga, De Bellis Stellarum.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
